During my last semester studying at Goldsmiths, University of London I was offered a position at SoftV as a games programmer for a period of four months. The company specialises in designing and developing games for medical and educational purposes. It has published different games along the UCL and UCL's Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience such as Listen-in, iTalk and SWAN.
During my work placement at SoftV I contributed to the development of SWAN, an educational app that aims to improve recall of alphabetical, numerical and word sequences by providing the user with the opportunity to practise them in ascending and descending order as presented. My tasks in this project have involved creating, designing and improving gameplay mechanics for the game, developing the procedural generation of the different levels, retrieving information from the players, creating UI's and managing databases. The game has been developed using Unity and C#
Due to my previous experience with machine learning and AI, SoftV was interested in applying my skills to create a second version of the game that, using a neural network and the player behaviour analytics, could adapt the level difficulty to the player dynamically. This will improve the effectiveness of the game in helping people with learning difficulties by making the learning process easier for them. Developing this additional objective, researching and working out how to implement it was another important point of focus.
Working with SoftV has been my first experience within the professional game industry and it has been extremely enriching. I have had the opportunity to work with people with more than 10 years of experience in the game industry, as well as with professionals from other fields, such as psychologists and artists that have provided assistance in the development of the projects and have widened the scope of the project. The experience has strengthened my skills as C# & Unity programmer, it has taken me out of my comfort zone providing me challenges, such as learning PHP and working with online databases. Finally, it has consolidated my interpersonal and communication skills.
